May looked up from her book as an especially loud clanking noise came from under Grandpa's old Mercedes Benz. May stood putting her book down and walked across the grass and over to the car where Grandpa Owen lay underneath it. His tools were scattered haphazardly out on the grass and dirt. May laughed as Owen slid out from under the car wiping the grease off his hands. He winked at her before popping back under.
"Grandpa Owen."
"Yes, May."
"Can I ask you a question?" May asked shyly, fidgeting with the sleeve of her fleece jacket.
"Sure," Owen replied, sliding out from under the old car and dusting himself off.
"I-I saw a-" She paused to collect her thoughts.
"Saw what?" he asked skeptically.
May swallowed, "Um. I think I saw Blue."
"Where was she?" Owen asked. May could tell he was trying to keep the excitement and fear out of his voice.
"Um. Well she was being captured. Her two raptor babies are okay though."
"No! Blue..." he trailed off, "We need to get to her. Who kidnapped her?"
"Three men: one was tall with a scar all the way down his arm, another one was muscular and had short blond hair-”
“What did they do to her?” Grandpa Owen exclaimed before forcing himself to listen.
“And the third,” May went on, “was tall and had bright blue, gleaming eyes." Grandpa Owen tightened his fists. May paused, "Will she be okay?" What if she isn’t okay? What if she’s hurt? We need to help her as soon as possible.
"I'm not sure. Thank you for telling me. We need to retrieve Blue's babies before more poachers come." His voice shook a tiny bit and his jaw was clenched.
"What should we do?" May asked quietly. She knew she was scared. I have no idea how we are going to get those terrified babies out of the forest. Her hands shook slightly.
"I'm going to visit an old friend tomorrow. He'll know what we can do. In the meantime we should fill your Mom and Claire in on our situation."
A few moments later Grandma Claire and Mom were sitting on the sofa as Grandpa told what happened and May filled in the gaps. She felt jittery but she forced herself to stay still and tell the full story. By the end of her thrilling tale Claire's hands had begun to shake slightly and Mom kept glancing out the window with a worried look on her face.
"So. Are you sure it was really Blue?" Mom asked a tremor in her voice.
"She fits the description." Grandpa Owen told her nodding.
"But you weren't there." Claire contradicted, wringing her hands.
"Mom, I've seen photos of Blue before. I think I would remember what a Velociraptor would look like. Especially if she was important." May answered solemnly and sincerely.
"You're right. Owen has shown you some evidence." She laughed slightly, "Even if it was a little blurry." May didn't feel like laughing with her.
"My photos are superb,” Grandpa argued with a twinkle in his sad green eyes, "I'll prove it," he said as he shakily pulled down a box of photos that read Blue’s baby photos.
"Aww. That's sweet. You have photos of Blue as a little raptor?" Mom giggled as Grandpa pulled out three clear pictures of Blue. May could tell it wasn’t a sincere laugh. She knew how worried her mom must be.
"Well I had to remember her somehow,” Owen said, his voice cracking, “And my camera was one of the only ways I could do that." He smiled slightly, "I still have some videos of her too. And her pack." Grandpa Owen grabbed his old camera off of its peg and showed it too May, "This is the first video I ever took of Blue." His smile faltered. May was curious. The video on the screen was of baby Blue hopping up and down as a young grandpa Owen held out a piece of meat for her. May laughed slightly at the funny raptor as she tripped over her own claws. Grandpa Owen must feel awful about Blue’s capture, May thought.
Maisie, who had been silent until now, stood clenching her fists. "I hope we can get her back." She said worriedly. May looked out the window and into the cloudy, bleak, dark sky. She wondered if Blue was looking up at the same cloud-filled sky. She fiddled with a button on her jacket sleeve. What will happen to Blue?
