The vampire squid (Vampiroteuthis infernalis) is a species of deep sea octopod that lives in temperate and tropical oceans. It isn't a squid nor an octopus because it has two long retractile filaments, located between the first two pairs of arms on its dorsal side. It also has bioluminesceent organs.
Its name comes from its dark color and cloaklike webbing rather than its habits; it feeds on detritus, not blood. The vampire squid is best known for its defense system; its arms are lined with rows of fleshy spines or cirri. It then covers the rest of its body with its cloak. Like many deep sea squids, it doesn't have an ink sac.
