Wombats are a type of marsupial that are native to forested, mountainous, and heatland areas of Australia. They were misidentified as badgers by early settlers because of their sizes and habits. The wombat is very territorial, defending its burrow against intruders. It also has a slow metabolism, taking around 8 to 14 days to complete digestion.
There are three known extant species of wombats; the common wombat, the northern hairy-nosed wombat, and the southern hairy-nosed wombat. They are protected under Australian laws.
