The woolly rhinoceros (Coelodonta) is a genus of extinct rhinoceros from the Pliocene to Pleistocene of Eurasia. The genus is known from four different species, the most famous of which is C. antiquitatis.
The woolly rhinoceros' discovery is an interesting story, when the first skull was found in 1335 on Klagenfurt, Austria, it was believed to be a dragon, as its skull was placed on a dragon statue, in the "Lindwurm Fountain," erected around 1500. Centuries later, with the advancement of paleontology, scientists were finally able to identify the skull as belonging to a woolly rhinoceros, an extinct Ice Age mammal.
